- Subproject 2: Hanover
The EZJM's Subproject is dedicated to rediscovering and digitizing the works of the Jewish composer Peter Ury, who emigrated to the United Kingdom during the Nazi era. The research focuses on compositions from Peter Ury's estate, which were written together with the theater director Peter Zadek, among others. The pieces examined also include "Der Judaskuss - The Kiss of Judas", the opera "Timothy" (based on the fairy tale "Hinzelmeier" by Theodor Storm), as well as settings of poems by Else Lasker-Schüler, Erich Fried and Robert Graves. These work complexes are examined because they deal in a special way with Ury's experiences of persecution and rehabilitation, the emotional boundaries of the intellectual as well as political dissidence and cultural affiliation. The aforementioned pieces include materials in the form of manuscripts, musical scores, audio documents, photographs, correspondence and other archival materials. These are examined as cultural legacies against the background of the expulsion, flight, exile and resettlement of Jewish people in the Federal Republic of Germany.
